Broadway Rave San Jose Concert reviews
NEVER AGAIN!
For our 30th wedding anniversary this past weekend, my wife and I made the decision to splurge on excellent seats (which were quite costly) for Broadway Rave's Constitution Hall concert in DC on Friday, 07 August 2009. We consider ourselves to be pretty sizeable Broadway Rave fans, though not "purist". In our collection, his music outweighs that of any other artist by far.
We were thoroughly disappointed with the performance. His arrogance and hubris were evident from beginning to end. Not a single big hit of Broadway Rave was played, not one!!! Instead, the majority of the music was from a 1968 album, none of which were popular songs...rather obscure selections. Combine that with his garbled lyrics (which one tends to expect from Broadway Rave) and I could barely comprehend more than 20 words during the 1.5-hour concert. Moreover, he consistently seemed to rebuke and catch his own band members off guard, as if nothing had been rehearsed. This gave the impression of a disorganized and frankly unprofessional show.
The tipping point came when he exited the stage (without performing a single hit song) and failed to return for an encore despite the fact that EVERYONE present had been patient and showed appreciation for his choice of concert music, standing in ovation. Disappointingly, he did not reappear on stage. To say the least, it was unsatisfactory. When it became evident to everyone present that he would not return, I heard the first "BOOs" ever at a concert. Regrettably, those boos were warranted.
I have no idea how he retains any band members. They are incredibly skilled musicians, but Broadway Rave's antics seemed intent on keeping them off balance.
While we will continue to appreciate Broadway Rave's music at home, we will never again attend his live concerts, nor will we suggest to our friends to go. In all honesty, seeing him in person has diminished the affection we once had for his music.
